Katie Colwell (she/her) is a New York City-based director and cinematographer specializing in bold visual storytelling and underwater work. Originally from a small town in Connecticut, Katie earned her B.A. in Filmmaking from Oakland University (Rochester, MI), where she also competed as a Division I swimmer.
With over five years of experience as a director of photography, Katie’s work spans narrative films, web series, and editorial and branded content. Her work includes collaborations with Flaunt Magazine, Saks, The Bowery Hotel and MALIN + GOETZ, and features talent such as Nat Wolff. Drawing on her background in competitive swimming, Katie is expanding her practice to underwater cinematography with a focus on immersive, emotionally driven work.
As a director, Katie has worked with acclaimed talent including Nat Wolff and helmed Season 2, Episode 2 of the award-winning web series Dead Enders. Her latest short, Lapse, marks her professional directorial debut—a proof-of-concept that fuses her lifelong connection to competitive swimming with her love of horror. Her upcoming film, Being Here, continues her exploration of water-bound storytelling through a tender slice-of-life drama about sisterhood, coming out, and connection aboard a sailboat.
